The town of Mattapoisett is a small residential community on the shores of Buzzards Bay. Like it's neighbor Marion, Mattapoisett is small in size but has extensive coastline, and was originally part of the town of Rochester until incorporating as a town in the 1850s.
The mainstay of Mattapoisett's economy during tne late 19th and early 20th century was its summer residents. As in Marion, there was an influx of relatively well-to-do summer residents who built summer homes in the town, typically large homes with
substantial grounds. Despite suburban development in the 1900s, these gracious summer homes remain part of Mattapoisett, and the principle industry is still the summer resident.
Mattapoisett is bordered on the west by Fairhaven and Acushnet, on the north by
Rochester, on the northeast by
Marion.
Mattapoisett is part of the Old Rochester Regional School District, which it shares with neighboring towns Rochester and Marion.
